CATALINA PBY 6/6A, Aeronaut # 1359/00

Description:

This model is a highly scale-like replica of a legendary American aircraft, at a scale of 1:17.5.

The prototype of this legend made its maiden flight on March 21, 1935! At the request of the U.S. Navy, several changes were incorporated into the design, allowing the Catalina to better fulfill its primary role as a patrol bomber. With an enormous fuel capacity of 1,475 U.S. gallons (= 5,380 liters) or 1,750 U.S. gallons with auxiliary tanks (= 6,620 liters), it achieved a range of 2,500 miles on a patrol mission! Power was provided by 14-cylinder Pratt&Whitney R-1830-92 twin-row radial engines with a takeoff power of 1,200 hp. They drove Hamilton-Standard 28E50 three-blade propellers with a diameter of 12 feet. Although the aircraft was quite slow (cruise speed 188 km/h, max. 280 km/h), this was advantageous for its tasks.

The kit allows for the construction of both versions (PBY-6 – seaplane or PBY-6A – with landing gear). For the "6" version, some parts are omitted, saving approximately 200-250g in weight, which benefits water operation!

Kit Contents:

  • The surface of the GRP parts is meticulously detailed with engraved lines, indications of removable mudguards, etc.
  • Some CNC-milled plywood parts, including Bowden cable outer tubes for rudder and elevator control, are pre-installed in the fuselage by the manufacturer.
  • The three-part wing, horizontal stabilizer, and rudder are constructed using Styro-Balsa technology, with ailerons and elevators designed as Elastoflaps.
  • The wing parts are connected and the horizontal stabilizer is joined to the fuselage using carbon fiber tubes, whose guides are already glued into the center wing section.
  • The main landing gear, made of steel wire, is included as a pre-soldered, ready-made part in the kit.
  • Several plastic parts produced using a vacuum forming process
  • CNC-milled plywood or GRP parts
  • A large number of small parts
  • Detailed blueprint
  • Comprehensive building instructions with construction step photos
  • Decals
