The German Fokker D.VII is considered one of the best fighter aircraft of World War I. Its history began in 1917 when the Allies had gained air superiority with the S.E.5a and the SPAD fighters.
To counter this, the German side called on aircraft manufacturers to present prototypes for single-seat fighter aircraft for evaluation in January 1918.
The design with the best overall performance would receive a production contract.
The Fokker D.VII was the winner and received an initial order for 400 machines. A total of 3,300 DVIIs were produced, and over 700 were in service after the end of the war.
Its high-altitude performance, in particular, made the Fokker D.VII a formidable opponent.
