The Original:
Even if it's not immediately obvious, the F9F Panther is one of the classic vintage jets. It was designed as Grumman's first jet aircraft from 1945 onwards. The Panther followed in the footsteps of famous "cats" like the Hellcat and Bearcat. Its maiden flight was in November 1947. The F9F saw its baptism of fire in the Korean War, where it primarily served as a ground attack fighter. Its adversary at the time was the classic Soviet MiG-15. Since the Panther could operate from both land bases and ships, it was flown by both the US Navy and the Marines. Typical features of the Panther F9F include a round fuselage cross-section, the flowing lines of the jet, and the unswept wings with very elegant-looking tip tanks at the wingtips.
